Along with side-impact door beams, the Civic was built with an Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure to redirect crash energy around the passenger compartment. This reinforced body structure is designed to target the highest safety ratings for occupant protection.

Expanding Protection
While sharing our roads with many other drivers, a time may arise where collision is unavoidable. For superior defense during impact, Civic occupants are surrounded by no less than six airbags. The array of coverage includes dual-stage, dual-threshold front airbags, front side airbags with passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS) and side curtain airbags—all standard.

In Charge
Standard on every Civic, is a complement of advanced safety systems to keep you out of trouble and in command. The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) alerts the driver when a tire’s pressure reaches a significantly low level.

* Government star ratings are part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA’s) New Car Assessment Program (www.safecar.gov)

Environment

For three decades, Honda has played a leading role in meeting environmental challenges.

Yesterday
The Civic Coupe comes from a long line of environmentally friendlier vehicles. Way back in 1975, the Honda Civic CVCC became the first vehicle to pass the emissions requirement of the Clean Air Act without using a catalytic converter. The 2008 Civic features technological achievements that are every bit as impressive.

Today
Today's Civic Coupe sports a 1.8-liter engine that provides exceptional fuel economy (25 mpg city/36 mpg highway), and qualifies as an Ultra-Low-Emission Vehicle (ULEV) in all 50 states.

Stellar Performance

The remarkably fuel-efficient* Civic Hybrid is a marvel of technological innovation.

Powerfully Efficient
The Honda hybrid technology Integrated Motor Assist IMA® system consists of a super-efficient 1.3-liter, 8-valve, i-VTEC 4-cylinder gasoline engine paired with a lightweight, high-output electric motor, which adds extra power when needed.

Uncannily Smooth
The Civic Hybrid is equipped with an uncannily smooth continuously variable transmission (CVT), which blends the ease of an automatic with the efficiency of a manual. An idle-stop feature automatically shuts off the Hybrid's gasoline engine when you stop, so you save gas and help keep the air cleaner.

* EPA-estimated 40 city/45 hwy mpg. Based on 2008 EPA mileage estimates, reflecting new EPA fuel economy methods beginning with 2008 models. Use for comparison purposes only. Do not compare to models before 2008. Your actual mileage will vary depending on how you drive and maintain your vehicle.

Performance Features
  • 1.3-Liter, 8-Valve, i-VTEC 4-Cylinder Engine
The Civic Hybrid features a highly efficient, 1.3-liter, 8-valve, i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine and DC brushless electric motor that are designed to coexist with the environment in a very friendly way.

  • Electric Motor
The IMA electric motor works in conjunction with the gasoline engine, and supplies additional torque in assist mode. The motor's ultra-thin design allows it to be mounted between the engine and the transmission. The motor also functions as the generator for the IMA system during deceleration, and as a starter, quickly spinning the engine up to idle speed.

  • Idle-Stop Feature
The Civic Hybrid is equipped with an "idle-stop" feature that temporarily turns off the engine to save fuel and minimize emissions. A green auto-stop light on the instrument display flashes to indicate when the idle-stop feature is operating. As the Hybrid comes to a stop, the idle-stop occurs automatically. Engine restarting occurs automatically, as soon as the brake pedal is released.

  • Drive-by-Wire™ Throttle System
Instead of a mechanical linkage from the accelerator to the fuel-injection throttle, the Civic Hybrid uses "Drive-by-Wire" technology. The system uses an electronic position sensor connected to the accelerator pedal that sends an electronic signal to the PCM controller.

Reverse Your Thinking.

It’s All Good
If you think driving a hybrid vehicle is a necessary sacrifice for the good of the environment, it's time to reverse your thinking. The Civic Hybrid with available Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™* with voice recognition might be a good place to start. Or listen to this: a 160-watt CD audio system capable of playing MP3 and WMA formats puts groove into your commute. A flat floor ensures there’s room to move.

Friendly Reminder
And just to remind you it is a hybrid you're driving, Honda has included a handy Average Fuel Consumption Indicator. This hybrid operates at a whole different altitude.

Environment

Today's Civic Hybrid represents the very latest in our commitment to positive environmental change.

Right Where It Helps
You'll feel the benefits of the refined gasoline-electric powertrain on the Civic Hybrid right there in your wallet at fill-up time. And with an EPA-estimated city/highway rating of 40 city/45 hwy mpg,* you won't have to stop for quite a while.

Wow
Mile after mile, you get to enjoy the thoroughly modern style, comfort and convenience of a Honda Civic. The Civic Hybrid is living proof that environmentalism and style can go hand in hand.

Air Apparent
The air also benefits with the Advanced Technology Partial-Zero-Emission Vehicle (AT-PZEV) rating, which is the most stringent emission standard achieved by a gasoline-powered vehicle in the U.S.

* Based on 2008 EPA mileage estimates, reflecting new EPA fuel economy methods beginning with 2008 models. Use for comparison purposes only. Do not compare to models before 2008. Your actual mileage will vary depending on how you drive and maintain your vehicle.

†AT-PZEV rated by California Air Resources Board (CARB).

Environment Features

  • Advanced Technology Partial Zero-Emission Vehicle (AT-PZEV)† To achieve Advanced Technology Partial Zero-Emission Vehicle (AT-PZEV) status, a vehicle must be a Super-Ultra-Low-Emission Vehicle (SULEV) with zero-evaporative emissions and carry a 15-year/150,000-mile warranty on emissions equipment. Every 2008 Civic Hybrid has a plastic-resin fuel tank that helps control evaporative emissions, keeping them to near-zero levels.
  • 1.3-Liter, 8-Valve, i-VTEC 4-Cylinder Engine The Civic Hybrid features a highly efficient, 1.3-liter, 8-valve, i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine and DC brushless electric motor.
  • Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) Every 2008 Civic Hybrid is equipped with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Similar to an automatic transmission, CVT is an advanced transmission that substitutes the gears found in more traditional transmissions and replaces them with a metal push-belt running between a pair of variable-width pulleys. Combined with the Drive-by-Wire™ throttle system, the CVT constantly adjusts to provide the most efficient drive ratio possible depending on torque load. Honda CVTs provide better fuel economy* and acceleration when compared to a conventional transmission.
  • Integrated Motor Assist IMA® IMA couples a 1.3-liter, 8-valve, i-VTEC® 4-cylinder gasoline engine with an electric motor. Although the engine alone provides sufficient driving performance, when additional power is required, a permanent-magnet electric motor mounted between the engine and transmission provides power assist. The electric motor can propel the car from a stop to speeds up to 35 mph. Together, the motor and engine produce 110 hp @ 6000 rpm.
  • Drive-by-Wire™ Throttle System Instead of a mechanical linkage from the accelerator to the fuel-injection throttle, the Civic Hybrid uses "Drive-by-Wire" technology. The system uses an electronic position sensor connected to the accelerator pedal that sends an electronic signal to the powertrain control module.
